The Sunnah method of burying a deceased person involves wrapping them in a shroud, laying them down in the grave, placing planks on top, and then filling the grave with soil. Burying the body in a coffin or a box is a Christian custom which is not followed by Muslims. If there is a legitimate excuse or urgent need to bury the deceased in a coffin or wooden box, there is latitude to do so. However, it is not correct to unnecessarily abandon the method prescribed by Islam and adopt the practices of non-Muslims.

ولم يحتج إلى التابوت، إلا إن كانت الأرض ندية يسرع فيها بلى الميت قال في الحلية عن الغاية: ويكون التابوت من رأس المال إذا كانت الأرض رخوة أو ندية مع كون التابوت في غيرها مكروها في قول العلماء قاطبة.
(قوله: ولا بأس باتخاذ تابوت إلخ) أي يرخص ذلك عند الحاجة، وإلا كره.
