Topic: Burying the deceased with a Coffin    (No-17017)

Q What is the ruling on burying the deceased in a coffin?

a The Sunnah method of burying a deceased person involves wrapping them in a shroud, laying them down in the grave, placing planks on top, and then filling the grave with soil. Burying the body in a coffin or a box is a Christian custom which is not followed by Muslims. If there is a legitimate excuse or urgent need to bury the deceased in a coffin or wooden box, there is latitude to do so. However, it is not correct to unnecessarily abandon the method prescribed by Islam and adopt the practices of non-Muslims.
