Topic: Ruling on Performing "Tahneek" on a Newborn    (No-19227)

Q When a child is born, it is common for people to ask an elderly person to perform "tahneek" on the newborn. Is it obligatory to perform "tahneek" when a child is born?

a The Beloved Prophet of Allah (peace be upon Him) used to perform "tahneek" for newborns. As reported in Sunan Abu Dawood, on one occasion, he chewed a piece of date and placed it in the mouth of a newborn baby from the Ansaar; the child tasted it with its tongue and then swallowed it.
Thus, performing "tahneek"—the practice in which a respected elder chews a piece of date or another sweet item and places it in the newborn baby's mouth —is considered a Sunnah act.
