During menstruation, intercourse or intimate contact in the area between the navel and the knees is haram and a serious sin.
In this situation, since the husband engaged in intercourse without knowing that his wife was menstruating, while the woman was aware of her condition, it is necessary for her to make sincere tawbah (repentance) and seek forgiveness.
It is also recommended for her to give some sadaqah according to her financial status, as it is mentioned in a Hadith that a person who has intercourse with his wife during menstruation should give one dinar or half a dinar as sadaqah. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith no. 290)
Note:
One dinar is approximately 4.374 grams of gold.

منها حرمة الجماع هكذا في النهاية والكفاية وله أن يقبلها ويضاجعها ويستمتع بجميع بدنها ما خلا ما بين السرة والركبة عند أبي حنيفة وأبي يوسف هكذا في السراج الوهاج فإن جامعها وهو عالم بالتحريم فليس عليه إلا التوبة والاستغفار ويستحب أن يتصدق بدينار أو نصف دينار كذا في محيط السرخسي۔
