The Shariah makes it obligatory for men to keep the hem of their trousers, pants, or any other garment (such as a robe, kurta, etc.) above the ankles. Allowing the hem of the garment to hang below the ankles is “makrooh tahreemi”, a sign of arrogance, and a cause Allah’s wrath and anger.
The Noble hadith warns against the punishment of Jahannum for those who let the hem of the garment below the ankles. It is narrated in Sahih Bukhari that:
“Whoever lets the hem of their garment hang below their ankles will enter Jahannum”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith Number: 5787, Book of Dress, Chapter: Wearing the garment below the ankles)
There is a narration from Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sunan Abi Dawood, where he said:
"Whatever the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said regarding the izaar (lower garment), it applies to the qamees (upper garment) as well."
