Topic: Celebrating Eid Meelad un-Nabi in the Way that is Prevalent Today   (No-16971)

Q What is the Shariah ruling on celebrating Eid Meelad un-Nabi? Please explain in detail.

aThere’s no room for any Muslim to hold even a shred of doubt in the fact that commemorating the Prophet (peace be upon him) is a source of mercy and blessings. This could be in the form of mentioning his blessed birth, recalling his clothing and attire, or describing the way he sat, stood, ate, or drank etc.
However, Eid Meelad un-Nabi (the Prophet’s birthday) was not celebrated during the time of the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them), the Tabi’een or the Tab’a Tabi’een in the manner it is celebrated today nor is there any evidence for it in Shariah.
Taking part in Eid Meelad un-Nabi celebrations that are prevalent in our society today is not correct and should be avoided because these celebrations are associated with the following evils:
1. Attending and participating in this gathering is considered obligatory, and those who do not participate are subjected to curses and insults.
2. A specific date is designated for this celebration and doing Qiyam at the end of these gatherings is considered an obligatory act.
3. It is believed that the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself attends these gatherings.
4. Fabricated narrations are recounted in these gatherings.
5. The gatherings go on till late at night which then affects the attendees’ ability to pray fajr while also disturbing the residents of the neighborhood.
6. Money is spent extravagantly and wastefully in these gatherings.
