Topic: Breaking Off an Engagement is Merely a Breach of Promise    (No-18110)

Q If, after an engagement, the girl's family decides to break off the engagement, stating that their relatives no longer agree to this match, but the boy's family does not wish to break off the engagement, can the engagement be ended without the boy's consent?

a It is important to understand that an engagement is merely a promise to marry, not an actual Nikkah (marriage contract). Ending an engagement is considered a breach of promise, and while it is considered sinful to do so without a valid and justifiable reason, the consent of the boy is not necessary in this matter.
