Topic: Restrictions During Iddah   (No-21385)

Q My mother is currently observing iddah. Could you please guide me on the restrictions imposed by Shariah upon a woman observing iddah? Are there any restrictions regarding the type of soap or shampoo that can be used? Is there a specific type of comb that should be used? Please also inform me about the requirements of pardah during the iddah. I am eagerly waiting for your response, and I would also like to mention that my mother is 60 years old.

a It is obligatory for a woman observing iddah (the waiting period after divorce or the death of her husband) to adhere to the following restrictions:
i) Do not leave the house unless absolutely necessary.
ii) Avoid wearing makeup of any kind.
iii) Avoid wearing jewellery of any kind (neither gold nor silver or any other metal).
iv) Do not apply any fragrance or scent to the clothes or body.
v) Do not apply any oil to the body, even if it is unscented, unless there is a shariah excuse to do so.
vi) Do not apply kajal or kohl.
vii) Do not apply henna.
viii) Do not wear bright-coloured clothes.
Apart from these instructions, the restrictions of pardah (veiling oneself) remain the same as they are under normal circumstances.
Other restrictions commonly discussed in society have no basis in shariah.
