Topic: Naming a Child Haram Hajira

(No-65883)

Q Is it permissible to name a child Haram Hajira?

a"Haram Hajira" (حرم ہاجرہ) is a compound name. Just as a single name is permissible, a compound name is also permissible, provided its meaning is sound. However, since the Prophet ﷺ gave his children single names, and since the purpose of a name is identification, which is fully achieved with a single name, a single name is preferable. Haram (with a fatha on ح, a fatha on ر, and a sukoon on م) means sacred, revered, and the like. Hajira (with a fatha on ہ followed by alif, a kasra on ج, a fatha on ر, and a sukoon on the final ہ) means a capable and distinguished woman. It is the name of the wife of Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and the mother of Hazrat Ismail (peace be upon him). Therefore, naming a child Haram Hajira is permissible, but using only the name Hajira is more preferable. Allah the Almighty knows best. Darul Ifta Al-Ikhlas, Karachi.
