Topic: Whether a Child's Name Can Affect Their Health

(No-65940)

Q Assalamu Alaikum, Mufti Sahib! My daughter is ten months old. She was born on Sunday, 11 July 2021, at 3:30 AM. Despite all precautions, she has been unwell constantly since birth and her health has never been good. Her name is Zamal Fatima Zain. We are concerned that her name may be weighing heavily on her personality and causing her illness. Please resolve our confusion and guide us by checking her name according to Islamic principles. Jazakallah Khayran.

aIt should be understood that the Prophet ﷺ instructed parents to give their children good names and declared this a right that children hold over their parents. He ﷺ forbade names with bad meanings and personally changed names that carried poor meanings, replacing them with names of good meaning. A good and meaningful name does, therefore, have an effect on a person's character and personality. However, selecting a name based on the day or date of birth, or holding the belief that a name can weigh heavily on a child or affect their health because of numerological calculations, is not correct. Nothing of this kind is established in the Shariah. Regarding the name "Zamal" (زمل) mentioned in the question: if it is pronounced with a kasrah (short i-vowel) on ز and a sukoon on م, its meaning is "burden, weak, lazy, and inferior." If it is pronounced with a damma (short u-vowel) on ز and a fathah (short a-vowel) on م, its meaning is "cowardly, weak, and contemptible." Given these two meanings, this name is not appropriate. However, if it is pronounced with a fathah on both ز and ل, its meaning is "swiftness," and in that case the name Zamal is acceptable. Even so, it is better to name a girl after one of the Sahabiyat or the Azwaj al-Mutahharaat (may Allah be pleased with them all). Allah the Almighty knows best. Darul Ifta Al-Ikhlas, Karachi.

الأصل جواز التسمية بأي اسم إلا ما ورد النهي عنه۔۔وتستحب التسمية بكل اسم معبد مضاف إلى الله سبحانه وتعالى، أو إلى أي اسم من الأسماء الخاصة به سبحانه وتعالى؛ لأن الفقهاء اتفقوا على استحسان التسمية به. وأحب الأسماء إلى الله عبد الله وعبد الرحمن. وقال سعيد بن المسيب: أحبها إلى الله أسماء الأنبياء.
