Topic: Naming a Child Arshman

(No-65978)

Q Mufti Sahib, is it correct to name a boy "Arshman"?

aThe name Arshman (عرشمان) is a combination of two words. "Arsh" (عرش) is an Arabic word meaning a royal throne, a roof, a chief, a leader, or a place of shade, among other meanings. "Man" (مان) also carries several meanings, such as pride, arrogance, conceit, hospitality, and honour. Therefore, it is not advisable to name a child Arshman, because the name carries the possible meaning of "one who has reached the heights of arrogance and conceit". It is better to instead name the child after a Prophet, a Companion, or a saint, so that the child may receive the blessing of that connection and the barakah of that noble name. Allah the Almighty knows best. Darul Ifta Al-Ikhlas, Karachi.
