Topic: Naming a Child Irtiza

(No-66067)

Q Assalamu Alaikum. What is the ruling on naming someone Irtiza?

aThe form "Irtiza" (ارتضی) is derived from the root "Rida", which means to like or to be pleased. "Irtiza" is the third-person masculine singular past tense form, meaning "he liked" or "he was pleased". As a name, it therefore carries no purposeful meaning on its own. It is better to choose a name from among the names of the Prophets (peace be upon them) or the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them all) instead. Allah the Almighty knows best. Darul Ifta Al-Ikhlas, Karachi.
