Topic: The Meaning of the Name Ayan

(No-66082)

Q Mufti Sahib, please explain the meaning of the name Ayan.

a"Ayyaan" (اَیّان), with a fatha on the alif and a shadda on the ya, is an Arabic word used as a conditional and adverbial particle. It means "when" or "at what time", and is used to ask about the time at which something occurs. Since "Ayyaan" is not a meaningful word in the sense suitable for a name, it is not correct to name a child "Ayyaan". As for "Aayan" (آیان) with a madd on the alif, this is not an established Arabic word, and no meaning for it could be determined. Allah the Almighty knows best. Darul Ifta Al-Ikhlas, Karachi.
