Fasts during Ramadan can be skipped if a person is ill to the extent that fasting could further worsen their health and trustworthy medical experts have advised against fasting. once the person recovers and is able to fast again, they must perform qaza for the missed fasts. However, if the illness is chronic and there is no hope of regaining health in the future, instead of performing qaza, fidyah can be given. The amount to be given as fidyah for one fast is equal to the amount given as Sadqa Al Fitr, which is 1.75 kg of wheat or the monetary equivalent to the price of 1.75 kg of wheat.
It is important to remember that after giving fidyah, if a person regains their health and the ability to fast at any point during their lifetime, they must perform qaza for the missed fasts.
