It should be understood that the Hijri Calendar, which begins with the month of Muharram, has been designated for Muslims, and it is through this calendar that our Islamic identity is expressed. In contrast, the start of the Gregorian year is an occasion celebrated by non-Muslims, and Muslims have been instructed to avoid imitating them.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”
(Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith no. 4031)
Therefore, Muslims should refrain from saying “Happy New Year” on this occasion.
At the start of the new year, Muslims should focus on two things:
reflecting and taking account of the past, and
planning a clear course of action for the future.
For a believer, the start of a new year should not be a moment of celebration. Rather, it should create a sense of concern and awareness. It should remind the believer that life is steadily decreasing and slipping away, melting like ice. In light of this reality, one must ask: what is there to celebrate?
Instead, the believer should feel a growing urge to prepare for the Hereafter before the sun of life sets forever. This realization brings a sense of restlessness, as the time available is limited while the responsibilities are many.
For this reason, the new year is not an occasion of pleasure or joy for Muslims. Rather, it is a moment to recognize the value of passing time and to renew one’s resolve to make proper and meaningful use of the moments of life that lie ahead.

حدثنا سعيد بن أبي مريم، حدثنا أبو غسان، قال: حدثني زيد بن أسلم، عن عطاء بن يسار، عن أبي سعيد رضي الله عنه، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: «لتتبعن سنن من قبلكم شبرا بشبر، وذراعا بذراع، حتى لو سلكوا جحر ضب لسلكتموه»، قلنا يا رسول الله: اليهود، والنصارى قال: «فمن»؟
سنن ابی داود: (رقم الحدیث: 4031)
حدثنا عثمان بن أبي شيبة، حدثنا أبو النضر، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن ثابت، حدثنا حسان بن عطية، عن أبي منيب الجرشي، عن ابن عمر، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم»۔

حدثنا علي بن عبد الله، حدثنا محمد بن عبد الرحمن أبو المنذر الطفاوي، عن سليمان الأعمش، قال: حدثني مجاهد، عن عبد الله بن عمر رضي الله عنهما، قال: أخذ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بمنكبي، فقال: «كن في الدنيا كأنك غريب أو عابر سبيل» وكان ابن عمر، يقول: «إذا أمسيت فلا تنتظر الصباح، وإذا أصبحت فلا تنتظر المساء، وخذ من صحتك لمرضك، ومن حياتك لموتك»۔
