Topic: Worshipping on Someone Else’s Behalf   (No-8067)

Q My elderly grandmother missed 18 fasts in Ramadan due to severe illness. Now she is incapable of fasting due to old age. Can my mother or my aunt (my grandmother’s daughter) observe fasts on my grandmother’s behalf?

a It is important to note that physical forms of worship such as prayers and fasts cannot be fulfilled on someone else’s behalf. Therefore, it is not permissible for your aunt or your mother to fast on your grandmother’s behalf.
