The Ruling on Following Different Madhhabs According to Convenience

Mufti Sahib! We live in Australia. Here, some people claim to follow a particular Imām (school of jurisprudence), yet in different issues they sometimes act according to one madhhab and at other times according to another, choosing opinions from different schools based on convenience or perceived necessity.
Kindly clarify whether it is permissible in Sharīʿah to follow different madhāhib in this manner. Furthermore, what is the Islamic ruling regarding such a practice?
It should be understood that it is not permissible for a person to follow one Imām in certain issues and then adopt the opinion of another madhhab in other issues merely on the basis of personal convenience or ease. Such a practice opens the door to manipulating the Shariah and following one's own desires rather than adhering sincerely to the injunctions of Islam.
However, if a genuine necessity or exceptional hardship arises, a person who is not qualified to derive rulings from the Shariah should refer the matter to a competent and reliable Scholar (Mufti).

لَيْسَ لِلْعَامِّيِّ أَنْ يَتَحَوَّلَ مِنْ مَذْهَبٍ إلَى مَذْهَبٍ، وَيَسْتَوِي فِيهِ الْحَنَفِيُّ وَالشَّافِعِيُّ.

والذي يظهر لي - والله سبحانه أعلم - أن المنع من التلفيق هو الراجح، لأن الذي اتفق عليه الجميع أن التلاعب بالمذاهب للشهوات واتباع الهوى، وهو ممنوع بنص القرآن الكريم، قال الله سبحانه وتعالى: ﴿فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ الْهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَضِلُّونَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ بِمَا نَسُوا يَوْمَ الْحِسَابِ﴾ [سورة ص: ٢٦].
ولئن فُتح باب التلفيق بمصراعيه، لأن أدى ذلك إلى اتباع الهوى وانحلال ربقة التكاليف، ولكن التلفيق الممنوع هو أن يختار الإنسان في قضية واحدة مذهبين بما يؤدي إلى حالة لا يجيزها أحد حتى في تلك القضية بخصوصها، فأما إذا اختار المرء في مسألة قولًا بخلاف مذهبه، فلا يجب عليه أن يلتزم بذلك المذهب في المسائل الأخرى أيضًا.
